ATHLETIC PROGRAM
Currently, Zion students participate in team sports connected to secular schools and organizations. When possible, students and coaches form teams together to represent Zion in local leagues and also at our annual LEST tournament at Concordia University in Portland.
Zion Lutheran School´s athletic program is of a unified approach. Zion recognizes the importance of the close relationship between the physical education program and its extra-curricular athletic program; that there is a progression from the classroom into athletic competition that promotes, supports, and provides positive educational experiences for the students. A key consideration is participation for the students whether they are highly skilled or not. Fun, enjoyment, fellowship, and growth are important aspects of our athletic program. Whether the teams are winning or losing, the program needs to be positive and enthusiastic.
-
Coaching: The beginning of the season, the coach is to communicate to players and parents, his/her expectations of conduct requirements and the consequences of violation. Students are required to have adult supervision until leaving their activity. In the event of accident or injury, reasonable aid will be exercised and parents will be contacted. An injury report form will be filed with the school office. These and other guidelines are to be communicated by the athletic director to the coaches.
- Practices: Schedules will not involve more than two practices or two games per week and will not exceed a total of three activities in a week. All practice sessions and games will be scheduled through the athletic director and will run no longer than 90 minutes.
- Participation: All students are encouraged to participate in the offered programs. Participants are not determined by skill or ability, but may be placed on teams accordingly. In maintaining an educational perspective, provisions may be invoked limiting a student´s participation due to poor classroom performance or citizenship. Regular attendance and cooperation at practices may also determine a student´s eligibility. Parental consent and student medical status forms are to be filed in the school office annually.
