Great Faces and Places First Grade News January 5, 2009 Bible Time This week we will be exploring the wait for Simon and Anna is over, Jesus our Savior has arrived. We will also explore the Wiseman and what they went looking for. Memory Verse LUKE 2:10 “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.” Phonics This week we will be covering the vowel y, combination er and trigraphs igh. We will practice reading decodable readers 21 and 22. We will increase our fluency with Fluency Reader 11. Spelling The list is attached to the hard copy that comes home Monday. FYI: Reading Groups 2 and 3 now have challenge words! Grammar We will explore present tense verbs. Verbs are action words. Literature We will continue to read Matilda. Reading Group One will read Greg’s Mask . We will explore vocabulary, comprehension, compare/contrast, and possessives. Group Two is covering Marc Brown’s Arthur books this week. Group 3 is working on Moose Meeting. Math We begin time and money. Please review time to the hour and the names/values of coins. Show –n- Share Please place items to be shared in the pink laundry basket just outside our door. Art We will be creating snowmen and brayer painting. We will draw a bear. Music We will join Mrs. Brown for singing! PE We will participate in balance beam activities! Social studies We are researching Martin Luther King Jr. Science We will finish out paper this week. Next week we begin the arctic and Antarctic; penguins and polar bears. OVER Home work Phonics – M-Th Math—M-Th Reading 10 minutes- each night Memory Verse Field Trips In the hopper… Tentative!!! Despereaux!!! Thursday, January 15th at 12:45pm, return 3:00pm…tentative…I do not have all the details till Monday! Keep your eyes peeled for permission slips. Friday, Jan. 9th KEZI Channel 9 leave at 11:00am return at 3:00pm Please remember to pack a sack lunch, we will be eating at KEZI…milk will be available to everyone. Thursday, Jan. 22nd Chapel Our class chapel is scheduled for March 4th…mark your calendar now! Library Library books are due on Tuesdays…place in the ‘pink’ laundry basket and we will make sure they are returned. Cooking We will create parfaits! Projects Our next project will be on contributions to our country from either women or people of color. The project will be due mid January, the 20th to be exact. Information went home! Great Faces and Places First Grade News December 15, 2008 Bible Time This week we will be exploring Jesus is Born! Shepherds see the Savior. Memory Verse Luke 2:10 “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.” Phonics This week we will be covering final stable syllables ble, fle, ple, ble, tle, gle, cle, kle, sle, zle. We will practice reading decodable readers 19 and 20. We will increase our fluency with Fluency Reader 10. Spelling The list is attached to the hard copy that comes home Monday. FYI: Reading Groups 2 and 3 now have challenge words! Grammar We will explore verbs. Verbs are action words. Literature We will read Matilda. OVER Reading Reading Group One will read a variety of Christmas stories . We will explore characters, settings, and plot. Group Two is covering Marc Brown’s Arthur books this week. Group 3 is working on review. Math We will be working on place value to 100. We begin time and money at the first of the year. This is a very difficult concept for most children. Please start discussing time to the hour and the names/values of coins. Show –n- Share Please place items to be shared in the pink laundry basket just outside our door. Art We will be creating painted candy canes. We will also be working on our super secret Christmas presents….shhhh. Music We are almost ready…with our songs for Christmas worship with Mrs. Brown. Please have your child at school in the gym no later than 6:45. We have the greatest representation! PE We will participate in reindeer games! Social studies We are researching Advent and Christmas around the world. Science Paper is our new unit of exploration. This week we will discover paper folding, absorption and decorating. Cooking We will create Ginger Bread Houses this week, on Friday! Projects Our next project will be on contributions to our country from either women or people of color. The project will be due mid January. Information is going home Monday! Christmas Worship Mark your calendar…we will lead worship On Wednesday, December 17th at 7:00 pm. Please have your child in the gym by 6:45pm. Have you signed up to help with the reception??? We need help!!! Christmas Party Our Christmas party will be Friday, December 19th, the last day before Christmas break. We are still in need of candy for the houses, white frosting, and Prayer Partners Each child has a prayer partner to be praying for and doing random acts of kindness!!! Great Faces and Places First Grade News December 8, 2008 Bible Time This week we will be exploring the rebuilding of Jerusalem and John. It is time to get ready! Christmas is coming and Jesus will return. Memory Verse Nehemiah 8:10 “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Phonics This week we will be covering j, the Floss rule, v, ve, and final c... We will practice reading decodable readers 17 and 18. We will increase our fluency with Fluency Reader 9. Spelling The list is attached to the hard copy that comes home Monday. FYI: Reading Groups 2 and 3 now have challenge words! See back! Grammar We will explore verbs. Verbs are action words. Literature We will read Matilda. OVER Reading Reading Group One will read Stan’s Stunt. We will explore vocabulary, context clues, study skills, and suffixes. Group Two is covering sharks this week. Group 3 is working on a unit review. Math We will be working on place value to 100. Show –n- Share Please place items to be shared in the pink laundry basket just outside our door. Art We will be creating a stained glass windows; with paper. We will also be working on our super secret Christmas presents….shhhh. Music We have begun working on our songs for Christmas worship with Mrs. Brown. PE We will participate in basketball games! Social studies We begin our research on Advent and Christmas around the world. Science Paper is our new unit of exploration. This week we will make paper, a paper quilt and explore recycling. Great Faces and Places First Grade News December 1, 2008 Bible Time This week we will be exploring Naaman and Jonah. God is in control. He is here with us. Memory Verse Psalm 145:18 “The Lord is near to all that call on Him…” Phonics This week we will be covering k, y, digraph sh and digraph oo. We will practice reading decodable readers 15 and 16. We will increase our fluency with Fluency Reader 8. Spelling The list is attached to the hard copy that comes home Monday. Grammar We will explore Days, Months and Holidays as nouns. Literature We will read Matilda. Reading Reading Group One will read Vet. We will explore vocabulary, context clues, study skills, and sequencing. Group Two is covering sharks for the next two weeks. Math We will be working on place value to 100. Show –n- Share Please place items to be shared in the pink laundry basket just outside our door. Art We will be creating a snow resist and a tissue paper tree. Music We have begun working on our songs for Christmas worship with Mrs. Brown. PE We will participate in jump roping! Social studies We begin our research on Advent and Christmas around the world. Science Paper is our new unit of exploration.
